Neerja is an upcoming 2016 Indian biographical film, directed by Ram Madhvani starring Sonam Kpaoor in lead role. The story and screenplay by Saiwyn Quadras and produced by Atul Kasbekar under the banner of Fox Star Studios.
The film is based on Neerja Bhanot – Pan Am Flight 73 Hijacking in 1986. This film shows how a young flight attendant fought for the lives of her passengers. Bhanot was the senior flight purser on the ill-fated Pan Am Flight 73, which was hijacked by four heavily armed terrorists after it landed at Karachi at 5 am from Mumbai. PA 73 was en route to Frankfurt and onward to New York City.
The hijackers opened fire and set off explosives. Bhanot opened the emergency door and helped a number of passengers escape. She could have been the first to jump out when she opened the door but she decided not and was shot while shielding three children from a hail of bullets.
Neerja certified 15 by British censors on 16 February 2016. Approved run time: 121 min 23 sec.
