Reema Lagoo (1958–2017) was a popular Indian actress, who was known for playing many supportive and motherly roles in Hindi and Marathi cinema. She had a presence on Marathi stage for nearly four decades.
She played a lead role in the Marathi serial Tuza Maza Jamena. She is well known for playing the main character’s mother in hit Hindi movies like Maine Pyar Kiya, Aashiqui, Saajan, Hum Aapke Hain Kaun,Rangeela,Vaastav, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai,”Kal Ho Naa Ho”and Hum Saath-Saath Hain.
Personal Life – She was born in 1958 in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. Her mother was actress Mandakini Bhadbhade who was known for the drama Lekure udand Jaahalee on the Marathi stage.
Lagoo’s acting abilities were noted when she was a student at the Huzurpaga HHCP High School in Pune. Her professional acting started soon after finishing high school. Her first acting job was on the Marathi stage.
Death – Lagoo was admitted to Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Mumbai at 1 a.m. (IST) on 18 May 2017 after she complained of chest pain. She died at 3:15 a.m. (IST) from cardiac arrest. She was described as being “perfectly fine and had no health issues” at the time of her death .
Career – Lagoo has mostly acted in supporting roles with some of the biggest names in the Hindi film industry. Starting out with television serials, she rose in prominence with the film Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (1988) where she played Juhi Chawla’s mother.
She has starred in some of the biggest hits in the Bollywood industry including the family drama Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! (1994), Yeh Dillagi (1994), Dilwale (1994), Rangeela (1995), Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998), and Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003).
She was known mostly in Bollywood for playing the mother of actor Salman Khan’s characters in films like Maine Pyar Kiya, Saajan, Hum Saath-Saath Hain: We Stand United, Judwaa, and Patthar Ke Phool.
